Aw hell no!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061010/ap_on_bi_ge/google_youtube_33

Google owns YouTube? This will be the DEATH of the popular video site. Companies are already having things removed from youtube. Now, I can understand them wanting to have the complete movies and episodes of shows removed for copywright infringment, that's cutting on their profits blah blah blah I can see where they're coming from there. But fan-made music videos done with jumbled up clips from their shows/movies that aren't hurting their profits at all and aren't getting money for anyone else? If anything, they're hurting free advertisment. I can name a number of series and movies I had no interest in until I watched some fan vids on YouTube. Not only will this purchase of YouTube by Google shoot the business elements in the foot, but the fan communities. YouTube has been a free method of sharing fan-vids roughly since the start. No one makes money from what they put on YouTube and it doesn't cost any money to put anything up. A home-schooled 13-year-old with no athletic abilities to speak of and no real talent with a pen or paintbrush becomes an icon in their fandom as a prodigious creator of fan-vids and anime music videos. Take away the ability to share these videos because of non-existant copyright infringement, and the aforementioned 13-year-old is stuck at home with little to do that seems worth doing. Kinda sucks don't it? One could even argue that these fan-vids are keeping young people out of trouble and away from drug abuse the same way many argue the same of sports and after-school activities.

I love You tube for watching old footage of bands that I like. I have no problem with Google owning it. I wonder if Google with ever start to cross the monopoloy line that microsoft did?
